This is a set of activities to build vocabulary for the "Pete the Cat, Five Little Pumpkins" story. This is a terrific little rhyme and story book to use for Halloween. It includes 42 picture-word cards, a matching game for the same words, a word-picture sort, a couple of worksheets, and a coloring sheet. (Most of the pictures are computer drawings. Samples of these can be seen in the photos.)
I use the picture-word cards to introduce the story's vocabulary, to allow students to understand and discuss meanings of words, to give words to discuss the illustrations, to classify the words in their created groups, to allow students to make connections from the vocabulary to their personal lives and the text, and to assist students in retelling the story.
There are options for these cards too. You can just use the ones you think are the most important, add a little more for a challenge, concentrate on a few for some struggling readers, or simply use all 42 with your whole class group.
The included vocabulary, picture-word cards are: Pete, cat, Grumpy Toad, toad, pumpkin, pumpkins, Jack-O-Lantern, pumpkin as Jack-O-Lantern, witch, witches, pumpkin as witch, vampire, pumpkin as vampire, Pete as Robot, Grumpy Toad as Witch, Frankenstein, bat, pumpkin as pirate, bats, pumpkin as Frankenstein, pirate, pumpkin as pirate, gate, sidewalk, Happy Halloween (words only), Oct. 31st, roll, skateboard, flashlight, run, fun, lights, sight, Trick-or-Treat bag, air, care, broom, late, and bird.****PLEASE NOTE: The words "pumpkin as" is NOT included on the card. For example, the pumpkin as a vampire would just have the word "vampire" on it. Thank you!****
The matching game has the same cards, but the pictures and words are seperated to play a matching game with them. (You may want to use two different colored cardstock to assist younger students; one color for the words and one for the pictures.)
There are also basic sort directions, title cards for sorting, and two chart choices to use in a literacy center or station. Students use the picture-word cards and title cards to sort the pictures into groups and write the words in the correct group on their sheets.
The three worksheets are simple yet relate to the story.
The coloring sheet is for early finishers or just for fun.
